Matthias Merkel Hess
Matt Merkel-Hess transforms familiar, mass-produced objects through sculptural language. By re-creating everyday vessels and icons of American consumer culture, he blurs the line between function and fine art. Hess’s work reflects on sustainability, material histories, and the cultural values embedded in the objects we use and discard. His work is in the permanent collection of the Museum of Fine Arts Houston; The Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento, Calif.; The Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art in Overland Park, Kansas; and The Cedar Rapids Museum of Art in Iowa. Potato Head #2, acrylic on canvas, 14 x 17 in., 2016.
